Then motioned to attendant nigh The Dame the wine-cup to supply: The page a massive goblet brought, In gold and jewels richly wrought: In the bright metal deftly chased, Boughs of the oak the rim embraced; From leaves and tendrils of the vine, Upon the sides, the god of wine Laughed forth, --embossed he sate, And seemed with his own juice elate: Satyrs around, a jovial crew, Stood forth in high relief to view; In rustic dance the group entwined, Were by the artist fair designed. The cup upon his bended knee The page presented gracefully; The Dame just pressed it to her lip, Just feigned the rich contents to sip, Then passed it to her noble guest, And urged the draught with fair request The Knight the goblet raised on high, Made meeting gesture in reply, Then to their healths he lightly quaffed Of the contents a sparing draught. Now to her steward the Lady calls, Bids him announce it through her halls, That one gay measure more be led E'er yet the banquet is purvey'd; Tells him the minstrel band prepare To give them forth their liveliest air. To lend this latest dance a grace, She wills her daughter take her place Among the rest. At the command Start forth the vassals hand in hand; As buoyant, light, seemed each to be, After the night's festivity, As if, till then, they ne'er before With pliant foot had touched the floor. Ranged for the dance, each buxom pair Beat time to the inspiring air, And whisper, jest, coquet, and laugh, Waiting the moment...
